Always Ready – My NFA Family

The NFA is more than just an organisation; the men and women of the Boko Buka family are the essence of service.

When I first met the men and women of the National Fire Authority, I didn’t just find a group of people doing their jobs — I found a family.

I will always remember with pride standing before Fiji on the Hibiscus stage to say:

“Who do you call? When I say Always, you say Ready! — because that is the spirit of the National Fire Authority: service, courage, and family.”

Those words came from the deepest part of me. The NFA is more than just an organisation; the men and women of the Boko Buka family are the essence of serving with love, unity, and purpose.

The Family Behind the Flame

From my first visit, I was struck by how close-knit the team was. Every firefighter, every staff member, every leader carried themselves with humility, but also with pride — not pride in their title, but pride in their purpose.

They welcomed me not as a guest or just a daughter of their Fleet Officer, but as one of their own. They laughed with me, prayed with me, and shared their stories — stories that showed me what true dedication to humanity looks like. And like all true families in Fiji, they also shared their food with me and my team — a simple act that spoke volumes about their warmth, generosity, and the spirit of togetherness that defines the NFA.

During my speech that night, I said something that I still carry with me today:

“Service is the highest form of love — because it asks nothing in return. When we serve, we give the best of ourselves so that others might find hope.”

That is exactly what the NFA represents — a light for others when life becomes dark or uncertain.

Their Strength, My Inspiration

Every time I see a fire truck or hear the siren’s call, I’m reminded of the bravery it takes to do what they do. These are people who run toward danger when everyone else is running away. That kind of courage comes not from duty alone, but from love — love for others, love for community, love for Fiji.

They’ve taught me that leadership isn’t about being seen — it’s about showing up when people need you most.

Always Ready — In Every Way

“Always Ready” isn’t just their motto — it’s their way of life. Whether it’s responding to an emergency, mentoring youth, or cheering me on through this journey, the NFA has shown me what it means to stand in unity.

Through the long hours, early mornings, and all the laughter and tears we’ve shared, I’ve come to understand something powerful:

“This journey was never walked alone. My NFA family taught me that service is an act of love — and that even the smallest voice deserves to be heard.”

They believed in me when I was still finding my footing. They made sure I never felt alone. For that, I will always be grateful.

My Heartfelt Thanks

To the leadership, the firefighters, the support teams, and everyone who carries the NFA badge — thank you. To an extent, i expected their support but the real emotional pull was when i saw the wives, husbands, partners and children cheeering for me online and on the streets of Suva. It remains my single best memory of the Hibiscus Pageant: that float parade! Thank you NFA Family for your warmth, your encouragement, and your unwavering belief in me and my team.

You have shown me what it truly means to serve humanity. You have taught me that family can be found in the most unexpected places — even in the quiet moments between the flames.

This crown I wear carries your spirit. Your courage, your compassion, and your love for people will always be a part of my journey.

“When I say Always, you say Ready! — because I know that wherever life takes me next, my NFA family will always be ready.”

Vinaka vakalevu, my NFA family — for your service, your faith, and your hearts of gold.
