Learning Each Other’s Future

The meke taught me that learning each other’s culture is one of the most beautiful ways we can grow together. It’s not about performance — it’s about respect.

When I first started learning the meke, I thought I was just preparing for the talent segment — another part of pageant training. But it became something much deeper.

At first, I told myself I would try to master the iTaukei language before learning the meke. But as I listened to the vucu — the powerful chants that give life to the dance — I realised that meke is not just movement or words. It’s the story of the indigenous people of this land. It’s Fiji’s heart speaking through rhythm, gesture, and spirit.

Every beat of the drum, every clap, and every turn of the hand carries history — stories of bravery, love, faith, and connection. And in that space, I felt something sacred: gratitude. Gratitude to be welcomed into a tradition that holds so much meaning for the people of this country, and pride to play even a small part in that rich cultural story.

The meke taught me that learning each other’s culture is one of the most beautiful ways we can grow together. It’s not about performance — it’s about respect. It’s about listening deeply, honouring what came before us, and understanding that identity is not limited by language or birthplace, but by the love we carry for one another’s stories.

As a Rotuman girl growing up in Suva, I’ve always believed that unity begins with curiosity — with the willingness to learn, to understand, and to celebrate the diversity that makes Fiji so special.

I may not have mastered the language yet, but I’ve learned something just as powerful: that every song, every movement, and every vucu holds the spirit of this nation.

I’m so grateful to have been a part of that — to learn, to listen, and to dance alongside the people whose stories have shaped this land.

Because when we learn each other’s culture, we’re not just learning the past — we’re helping shape the future.
